280daily is an online journaling web-based application. The neat feature of this site is that you only can enter 280 characters for each daily entry. Also, this site was chosen due to its security. The journaling site is 100% secure and only allows public access if the user allows it. You can also (class usage) download your journal entries directly to a computer in PDF format.
Benefits of Tool or App
-This tool only allows 280 characters. This is a huge benefit in Social Studies. When students make an entry, they must really chose what is important to write forming a true synthesis of gathered information and promoting deductive reasoning.
-280daily only allows one entry per day. Twitter allows you less words but unlimited posts, here students can only journal once with 280 words.
-This tool is secure, protecting students.
-280daily is downloadable, making grading, and student class interaction possible.
-This tool allows students to take on an active persona in the class, and allows those less verbal to still have personal reflection on the content.
-280daily (used in my Social Studies lesson) makes each student have personal connection with the content.
-This tool also integrates literacy into every usage.
-Interface is easy, as well as sign-up.
-Can upload images up to 5mb.
-Has a search feature that can locate your entries based of date or word criteria.
Constraints of Tool or App
-280 words, even though it is considered a positive above, does also limit to an extent. (If you want to use more words, I suggest a Tumblr account, however 280daily is much more secure).
-Does not seem to have a phone or tablet app. It is web-based only.
-Does not allow "safe" features for teacher control.

Classroom Uses for Tool or App
Student Uses So this is one of those "re-purposing of a tool to fit a lesson" type tools. I would use this tool as a Human Environment Interaction lesson. Students would take some type of natural disaster, environmental occupation, frontier farmer, or any other type of human perspective, that we are studying and create a fictional persona. The teacher would assign a character such as farmer, miner, factory worker, government official, etc. while doing a regional study. Then, each day, a scenario would happen as a class starter. Students would be required to log-in and journal in 280 words or less: What was going on, what the problem caused, and what possibilities or solutions to the problem are available to them. Each day two or three students would share, creating some class discussion, and even get some input to problem solution for the crisis from other students. This would last as long as the teacher would want it to. I would probably use this tool multiple times during multiple regional lessons. Also, once complete, we would download the journal entries, and use an additional web tools to compile the "life-of" of the students assigned characters. Something like an online comic strip is one example. This assignment is a great daily starter, and could all be done in perhaps 10-15 min.
Another student use: Instead of having students take on a human character and their reactions to an event. Have the student take on personification of an event or thing. For example: Hurricane Sandy ripped through the U.S. East Coast. You would get students to become the Hurricane and create journal entries based on what the Hurricane was doing to the people, land, and economics of that area on that day, personification of the hurricane. It would be easier to use a natural disaster that lasted for a few days and was older, therefore more evidence based research could be done before entering the journal entry. Again, students must do all of this in 280 characters, making them carefully chose what is absolutely necessary to write.
Teacher Uses The first thing that comes to mind is class documentation of what learning strategies you preformed on that day. This way, once your yearly review process happened, and you did not agree with that "developing" your administrator placed, you can pull this journal up, show it as evidence. You can also use this journaling for behavior documentation of students. Because this site is so secure, it really does not benefit any PLC's or online community unless you make it public, which I do not suggest. The best teacher use of this 280daily is the student based lesson.
